Bio

Dr. Girum Ayalneh Tiruye is an associate Prof. of Energy and Advanced materials at Materials Sciences/Department of Chemistry. His research areas are mainly concentrated on sustainable energy, energy storage technologies (Supercapacitors and Batteries), advanced sustainable materials for energy storage, biomedical, and packaging applications. After 5 years of international research experiences in EU (Wageningen University, and Wetsus, European Centre for Sustainable Water Technology, both in the Netherlands, IMDEA Energy Institute, Spain and Max Planck Institutes for Colloids and Interface, Germany), Dr Tiruye moved to Addis Ababa University, Ethiopia in 2016 to take academic responsibilities at Materials Sciences/Department of Chemistry, College of Natural and Computational Sciences, Addis Ababa University (AAU). Currently, he is a coordinator (equivalent to group leader in EU) of the Materials Science programme of AAU. His mission is to establish a long-term standing Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Materials Development and Nanotechnology by aligning to the existing Materials Science research programmes within AAU’s strategic plans.  Dr Tiruye is a young researcher and has strong passion for collaborative research and academic mobility at national & international level. He is currently coordinating one Intra-Africa Academic mobility (ESIMSAD Project, Grant No_624175) which is a five years project funded by EU-AU from 2021. He is also participating in two other national thematic projects at AAU. Dr Tiruye has successfully completed other international and national projects funded by The World Science Academy (TWAS) (Gran Agreement No_18-022RG/CHE/AFAC_IFR3240303621) (from 2018-2020) and one thematic research project funded by Addis Ababa University (Project No. TR/012/2016) (from 2018-2020). He has also participated with other three thematic research projects as co-PI from 2016 to 2022 in AAU. In case of approval of this project, due to this new position and the incipient state of his group, he will be able to devote at least 20-30% of his time/effort. He will also be able to count on advice and administrative support from Addis Ababa University, EU technical partner, consortium and also EU Delegation office at Addis Ababa for the realization of this project.
